What Are Composite Deck Boards?

Composite deck boards are a blend of recycled plastic and organic material, usually wood scraps ground into sawdust. While you might initially think that these products would be bad for the environment, the opposite is true.
Building natural wood decks requires a lot of lumber. Trees contain imperfections that make some parts unusable. Getting enough useable lumber for a full deck could require cutting down several trees. By reducing the demand for new lumber and recycling lumber waste to create composite boards, composite decking is a more environmentally friendly option.

Composite deck boards have a protective polymer coating and cap over the composite core to lock out moisture and protect the organic materials from absorbing water and expanding or warping. This protective coating is what helps a composite deck resist the elements and keep its color over the course of your deck’s life.

Design Your Composite Deck

Why Choose Premier Deck to Design Your Composite Deck?

We’ve helped New Hampshire residents and business owners get their perfect composite decks since 2016. We offer a simple five-step composite deck installation process that keeps you involved from beginning to end so you know exactly what to expect from your deck. Our process includes:

  • Initial Visit. One of our licensed and experienced contractors will meet with you at your home or business to hear your ideas, take measurements, take pictures, and have you sign our budget agreement so we know our constraints.

  • Design. We collaborate through designing your new deck, beginning with creating a few initial designs, then finalizing the design for the proposal with your feedback.

  • Proposal. We’ll draft a preliminary proposal and present it to you. We’ll create a final proposal and contract after the presentation.

  • Production. When it’s time to get to work, we’ll apply for the necessary permits, order your deck materials, and arrive on time Day 1 to get started.

  • Close Out. We’ll do a final walkthrough with you, collect your payment, and issue warranties for the materials and labor

FAQs

The length of time that it takes to build a deck depends on several factors like the size of the deck, foundation preparation, if the deck design is a simple or complex shape, and how long it takes to prepare the materials for installation. If you’re comparing installation time between pressure-treated wood decking or composite decking, both take a similar amount of time to install.

There are several benefits to choosing a composite deck over a traditional wood deck. The first is that composite decks don’t require much maintenance, as they will never warp, rot, or weather. They are also extremely durable and environmentally friendly because they are made from recycled plastics and organic materials.

Additional benefits include that you can get composite boards in a wide range of colors that, unlike wood, never require painting or staining (unless you want to change the color). You also never need to worry about splinters or split boards like with a natural wood deck when you choose a composite deck.

Composite decks are fairly low maintenance. To keep your composite deck clean, you can usually just sweep it free of debris, or even use your leaf blower to remove dirt and leaves from between the boards. Once or twice a year, you should use a mild detergent to remove any stubborn dirt, then wash it clean with your hose.
