What Are Composite Deck Boards?

Composite deck boards are a blend of recycled plastic and organic material, usually wood scraps ground into sawdust. While you might initially think that these products would be bad for the environment, the opposite is true.
Building natural wood decks requires a lot of lumber. Trees contain imperfections that make some parts unusable. Getting enough useable lumber for a full deck could require cutting down several trees. By reducing the demand for new lumber and recycling lumber waste to create composite boards, composite decking is a more environmentally friendly option.

Composite deck boards have a protective polymer coating and cap over the composite core to lock out moisture and protect the organic materials from absorbing water and expanding or warping. I first met Steve Kirk, owner of Premier Deck, during the summer of 2023 when I called him to discuss a rotting back deck. Steve was responsive and by virtue of his onsite visit I also saw he was honest, upfront and extremely knowledgeable. He recommended that I have the deck replaced not rebuilt. I mistakenly went with another contractor who told me the deck could be rebuilt (not replaced) and I learned a valuable lesson. The experience with the other contractor was disastrous. Needing help I did not hesitate to call Premier Deck and I shared with Zach Baker their project coordinator that I made a mistake by not going with Premier Deck in the first place. Zach came out for a visit and I had a quote in my hand in 24 hours.
Premier Deck completed our new deck in a timely manner last Spring and I could not be happier with the experience from start to finish. They were upfront, honest, dependable and they delivered exactly what they promised while making me part of the process. We ran into a little issue with an oil burner vent and town approval and Dennis Capo, the Project Lead, Zach and Steve worked me to find a solution that worked for all involved.
I was especially impressed with Premier Deck's internal communication and how my questions and feedback were quickly disseminated across the entire project team. Premier Deck aims to please and they are professional and courteous and are easy to work with and fair: no surprises, no hidden costs, no miscommunication. Working with Steve and his team was a complete 180 from my experience with the other deck company. Going with Premier Deck in the summer of 2023 would have made my life so much easier. Kudos to Steve and the business he has built.

We hired Steve and his team a few months ago in late winter to tear down our old wood deck and rebuild a new one with Azek decking. Steve did a great job going through the different options and working with us to select materials and design that fit our expectations. During the build, his team was really easy to work with and were in constant communication about the progress. They utilize a great online platform that gives you daily updates and pictures of each stage of the project. The deck came out great and we were really happy with the overall services. My husband and I had a phenomenal experience working with Steve and the rest of the Premier Deck team. Some of the things that gave us confidence during the planning phase were their responsiveness to complete a site visit and provide a (reasonable) quote within just a few days, and that the contracting terms were clear and fair with a robust paper trail. The team provided great transparency during the project. We especially liked the online portal where daily updates were provided along with photos, along with a summary of what work was to be performed in the coming days. Any delays to the project were minor and communicated in a clear and timely fashion. The team was flexible when additional time was needed to wait for some work to be completed by a plumber. All of the crew members were professional and pleasant. Most importantly, the quality of the work was phenomenal - the deck looks amazing!

NOTE: Photo shows project at 95% complete while we waited for the plumber to move an external fixture prior to project completion.

After set up an appointment over the phone. Owner Steve Kirk stopped by our house next day. He showed us few realistic options, materials, color and sent us the proposal within few days. Overall experience it's easy and simple for us. They work around the clock through the middle of winter. Steve and his team started our project in freezing cold weather every day (no matter snow day or rainy day) from 6am with daily update text and photos via the portal. His daughter April also kept us updated and response our questions in a timely manner. The final product turned out exactly what we are looking for and the new deck looks stunning. In our opinion, it is almost impossible these days to find a business in this industry that you can say out delivered on every aspect of a project, but in this case Steve and Premier Decks did just that. We got several quotes, and we found Steve's pricing very competitive, especially in light of the excellent quality and service we received. Due to our location directly on the ocean, our deck project had a significant amount of permitting requirements and engineering obstacles and even before we had signed on with Steve, he was jumping in to help problem solve and offer ideas to help us reach our goals. It was clear from the start how professional and experienced Steve was, and how seriously he takes his work. We had a rough idea of the deck design we wanted, but Steve’s excellent sense of aesthetic and attention to detail made a huge difference in how the end result turned out. He did a particularly beautiful job on our outdoor shower, making sure every detail was thought through and the finished product was exactly what we had hoped for, but would have had no idea how to bring to fruition on our own. In addition, Steve’s crew was incredibly hard working, laboring tirelessly through freezing temps and snow in December and January to deliver the project on time. They were courteous and tidy, and clearly knew the ins and outs of building a deck and multiple stairways as well. Even after the project was complete, Steve followed up multiple times with us to be sure we were satisfied and to answer questions about how to care for the decking (Azek). We are so thankful to Steve and his crew at Premier Decks for such a beautiful and well-built deck!
